Discovering Barcelona markets: from historic to moderns ones

Barcelona has a unique chain of markets you probably won’t meet anywhere in Europe. So walking by Barcelona city you can visit 39 food markets where you will find fresh cheese, fruits or almost everything you are looking for; food from all over the world, to be exact.

The rest of markets are those with lots of things you never thought it’s possible to find out. Barcelona vintage markets have developed during last 3-4 years and nowadays almost every month in agenda of the city you can see someone is organizing one of these markets on at the plaza del Mar or at the old train station.

 Walking through the history and buying some fresh fruits it’s more than possible. Check out the following 6 markets: La Boquería a must visit of course, not only a fresh food from all over the word, also some bars inside with typical food; Sant Antoni market in one of the top neighborhoods of Barcelona; then pass by Santa Catarina market in Born, recently renewed 325.000 pieces on its roof represent stands with fruits; next is La Concepció market at Arago, 317, or better say its surrounded by 4 streets: Arago, Valencia, Bruc and Girona, forming an island in the right Eixample; if you’re walking or staying at Barceloneta neighborhood don’t forget to pass by Mercat de la Barceloneta to buy some fresh fruits before going to the beach.

 Going over Barcelona straight to Sarrià – San Gervasi, we can see other markets that belong to the modernist period. As a great examples visit Galvany market at c/Santaló, 55; one of the most beautiful markets of Barcelona city. The market has a shape of a Greek cross with a central octagonal dome. Inside there are 28 iron columns that help to support the deck. In the side walls and the dome there are stained glass windows which are undoubtedly the star element.
