Marathon of Barcelona – a story that happened once
Just two days left before the most important Marathon of Barcelona starts. It’s a famous one for sure, but does anybody know its history? How was it? Who was behind it? Well, we have prepared some curiosities about it.
Barcelona Marathon, which nowadays is celebrated in the city, has its origins a few kilometers from the city and in the name of Ramon Oliu as the creator and promoter of it.
The Catalan Ramon Oliu was a chemist who worked for many years in the United States, where he began to run and where he had participated in the New York Marathon. In 1977, when he was 47, Ramon was transferred to Barcelona for work, convinced that marathons were popular in Barcelona as well, once he asked the date of the next marathon in the Federation. What it means, in Spain, to be able to run it was obligatory to be federated, therefore, there was no popular marathon. Motivated by his desire, Oliu decided to organize a first popular marathon, which ran in 1978. Even though that year the race was not held in Barcelona for lack of permits, is considered that the first city marathon took place.
During all these years the Marathon of Barcelona was canceled once, in 2005 because of its founder Ramon Oliu death. This meant that in 2006 the race resumed with even more force, as a real event for all professional and amateur athletics sport.
