Parc de la Ciutadella

Parc de la Ciutadella is a green oasis in the city, open Monday to Sunday from 10.00am to 10.30pm. It was created for the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition on the land once occupied by a fortress built to protect the city after the War of the Spanish Succession. Antoni Gaudí designed the artificial cave located beneath the park’s impressive waterfall.

Parc de la Ciutadella plays an important role during the annual festival of La Mercè, which takes place around 24th/25th September. During the festival the park hosts a range of activities, food vendors and a variety of arts and crafts stalls. During the rest of the year, there’s always the park’s fountains, sculptures, Castle of the Three Dragons and Umbraculum (a pioneering Modernist structure) to admire and visit.

Located just beyond the Castle of the Three Dragons is this iron and glass greenhouse designed in 1884.

Cascada Fountain

This huge, ornamental fountain features Aurora’s chariot. Designed by Josep Fontserè, much recognition is given to his young apprentice, Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí added the decorative lamp posts and various other details.
