Palau de la Musica Catalana
Palau de la Música is a must. Designed by the Modernist architect, Lluis Domenech i Montaner in 1908, the building features an impressive façade of colourful mosaic columns, large busts of Bach, Beethoven, Palestrina and Wagner, and a mosaic mural of Orfeó Català all crowned by a dome.
A magnificent sculpture on each corner of the building depicts St George, the patron saint of Catalan. In 1997 UNESCO awraded the building World Heritage status. Montaner intended for the building to appear strong and convey the beauty of nature. This explains the garlands of flowers on the stained-glass side panels of the main concert hall, the stone flower rosettes, patterned floor tiles, multi-patterned mosaic columns topped by peacock fantails and tilted wrought-iron circles of light. The brilliant centrepiece is a stained-glass sunburst that allows natual light to pour in from a concealed skylight during the day and artificial light at night. The whole building is a riot of colour, shape, form and light.
