Santa Caterina Market
Full of colour and flavour, this trendy food market is covered by a magnificent mosaic tiled roof. The project was the work of celebrated firm, Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, and it’s frequented by locals buying their fresh, daily groceries.
Mercat de Santa Caterina opened in 1848. Its purposa was to enhance the supply of foodstuffs in a quarter where the majority of the inhabitants were working-class families. The original building, of which very little remains today, was built by Josep Mas Vila, who had first designed a large facility for wholesalers that was never erected. Today's structure stands out for its spectacular roof, measuring 4200sq.m, topped with a ceramic finish in 67 colours by the artist Toni Comella.
A great place for lunch is “Cuines de Santa Caterina”, a cool tapas bar and restaurant inside the market offering the freshest of seafood and vegetables, inexpensive wines and an array of small plates.
